(Paris) Cork (Spleen) Thing

Wandesford Gallery, Cork.

This was a group show which ran during the Avant Fringe Festival in July '14. Organised by fellow graduate Roisin Foley, it comprised of ten CCAD graduates, each choosing one prose from Charles Baudelaires's Paris Spleen, and creating a piece of work interpreting in their own style while relating it to Cork City.

The piece that I presented for this show is an interactive piece based on the prose Which is the Real One? . Using hand-thrown ceramic beakers/vessels I let the viewer decide which one they think is the “real one” by letting them pick up the work that I make.

The beakers/vessels were not fired so that they would break if handled, creating a physical degredation of the piece until the vessel I chose to be real one is the only one unbroken. This was the only fired piece which represented the real Benedicta in the prose. The broken vessels therefore represented the short life of the more beautiful false Benedicta. As the show went on the broken vessels created the sense of the graveyard in which he becomes trapped.

By letting the viewer interact with the work I want to create a direct link between them, my work and the work of Baudelaire.
